My Love/Hate Relationship with Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS
I. Love. Transformers. When I was younger, I had a Starscream action figure. There was just something about having two toys in one that totally amazed me. I would spend an hour just transforming it back and forth. I loved the show, even though it was a little before my time. So obviously I was over joyed when it was announced that a Live ACTION was in the works...
I was doing more research on that first film than I did for any school project. From camera phone videos to concept art. When the first film came out, I was working at a grocery store that was about five block away from a theater. I went to go see that film three times. I'm sure other people saw it more than me but i was working minimum wage. I had some reserved feelings like; the flames on Optimus prime, the fact that Bumble Bee was a Camaro and not a Beetle, the fact that it seemed like way too many humans were in it, but all in all I enjoyed myself.
Then came the announcement of the film sequel. And once again, I freaked. Especially when at the market i worked at, walks in a team of guys buying cases and cases of water wearing shirts that said "TF2 Crew" on the back. This is when they were filming in Philadelphia. So again i do the research, check out the pics, and watch the trailer, over and over waiting in anticipation.
This should leave me pretty pleased right? Wrong. I went to go see this in theaters and was irritated almost the entire time. This film proved that there is such a thing as TOO MUCH AWESOME. The last half hour of the film was nothing but explosions and about 30 unrecognizable robots lasting each other. I left the theaters with a headache and haven't seen the film since.
So here it is 2011 and another film is on its way. I really had no intention of seeing it even after watching the teaser trailer that was released a few months back. But after seeing the Super Bowl ad for it... once again I am drawn in by the huge robots and huge explosions. Oh Transformers... you're like an ex girlfriend.

What i don't understand, and what i'll probably never understand is how can you say it was "too much awesome" in the second movie? Yes, there were a lot of transformers without names or real significance. But thats how ALL the transformers are. the only reason some took on vehichles and names were because they are the ones that stayed on Earth and had to blend in with human society. Every unnamed robot dies, and the action between them, i thought, was great.
ReplyDeleteI know why there were a lot of them without names and vehicles because they were "natural" autobots. It was too much for me. so much that it kinda lost me after a while. It made sense, it was just too much. There was too much to register. And in that case it was "too much awesome". im not saying it wasnt good, it just wasnt good for me at the time. i will give it another chance, i owe the TRANSFORMERS that much.
ReplyDeleteIt's alot to take in, I'll agree on that. ...I guess now would be a good time to tell you that in a behind the scenes...Michael Bay said he felt like he "fell off" from pt.1 to pt.2...so...expect "too much awesome."...again.
